07 Nov The Dangers of Body Modification
From breast implants to tattoos, more people are using body modification in order to express themselves or enhance their image. However there are several dangers of body modification. First let’s explore the origin of body modification including tattoos, branding, piercing, and skin carving.
Babylon The Great
In the big city of Ancient Mesopotamia, people would mark their slaves with a brand or carving. It was also a common practice in Babylon to permanently mark temple servants, especially shrine prostitutes, with a religious symbol representing a pagan god (demon). For example people who worship the pagan goddess, Ishtar, would get a tattoo of a star anywhere on their body. According to the Bible, God scattered the people in Babylon all over the earth (Genesis 11:9). Therefore these practices continued all over the world including in ancient Indian, Middle Eastern, and African civilizations.
This is why when God wrote the commandments he included, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the LORD. Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.” – Leviticus 19:28-29. God know that these idolatrous acts are straight from Satan’s kingdom. Today many people in witchcraft and occultism also have tattoos and marks representing the demon they are serving.
Acts of the Flesh
So why body modification is so dangerous? It is part of the acts of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21). Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. – Galatians 6:8. As Christians we can’t be children of God and children of sin. We were children of sin until we were redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Now that we have been redeemed we shouldn’t go back to gratifying our fleshly desires (Ephesians 2:3). Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! – 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Temple of the Holy Spirit
God does not like when people modify their bodies because your body is God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16). In the spiritual realm our physical bodies are seen as houses. This is why Jesus Christ states, “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.” – Matthew 12:43-44. When you get body modifications you are welcoming unclean spirits into your house. Therefore honor God with your bodies. – 1 Corinthians 6:20.
What about tattoos that are considered Christian such as crosses, bible scriptures, and images of Jesus Christ? The Bible states, “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” – John 4:24. God is not satisfied by the works of the flesh but things of the spirit. Things of the spirit includes faith, love, and truth. And without faith it is impossible to please God… – Hebrews 11:6.
As you accept Jesus Christ in your heart, just as your sins are cleanse by his blood so are your permanent body modifications such as tattoos, eye ball coloring, permanent makeup etc. If you have any body modifications that are easy to remove, remove it asap after receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior. Once you repent, move on, and start walking by faith.
