Jesus Christ states, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me”. – John 10:27. Sometimes we hear a voice in our head and don’t know whether it is God’s voice, our imagination, or another spirit’s voice. We will list the top ways to know for sure if the voice we are hearing is the voice of the Holy Spirit.
1. Aligned With the Bible
The voice of God will always quote scriptures to back up statements. There are few exceptions such as instructions on how to cook this particular recipe or how to do a particular things like mechanics, finance, etc.
2. Making Conversation
Most of our voices are limited to what we want to hear. The Holy Spirit will not always tell you what you want to hear. He will sometimes make conversation with you when your mind is silent. The spirit of God will also interact with you if you keep talking to him. He can keep up with a conversation if you continue to talk to him. This is why God states, “Come now, and let us reason together…” – Isaiah 1:18.
3. Knows Things You Don’t Know
The voice of God will tell you things that you would have no way in knowing. The Holy Spirit will tell you things that is going to happen in the future such as job raise, death of a family member, car accident, etc. God does this so we can interact with him and the spiritual world by praying. This is why God states, Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. – Jeremiah 33:3.
4. Silent but Powerful
Sometimes the voice of God will be silent but will show you visions and images. For example, you might be driving and suddenly you will see yourself doing some thing like you dropping something on a floor at a particular store. Then you’ll know that you need to be careful of not dropping something today.
5. The Presence
You will feel a presence every time the voice speaks to you. It may feel euphoric and heavy. It varies from person to person. This is why King David states, “Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.” – Psalm 51:11.
6. Conviction of Sin
Jesus Christ states that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment (John 16:8). So the spirit of God will judge and correct you of your actions, thoughts, and the things you say to people and yourself. He will do it immediately and gently.
7. Jesus Christ is Lord
The voice of God will agree with you that Jesus Christ is your Lord and your Savior. The Holy Spirit is one of the three witnesses that testifies that Jesus Christ is the son of God who died for our sins (1 John 5:5-9). This is why it is written, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” – 1 John 4:1.
