1. King of Righteousness
Melchizedek means king of righteousness (Hebrews 7:2). Jesus Christ is the king of righteousness (1 John 2:1, Revelation 19:16).
2. King of Peace
Salem is derived from the Hebrew word, shalom, which means peace. Both men are kings of peace (Hebrews 7:2, Philippians 4:7). Shalom also means peace as in not owing anything to another person which Jesus Christ has fulfilled when he died on the cross for our sins (Romans 6:23).
3. Priests
Melchizedek is a priest of the Most High thus was able to collect tithes (Genesis 14:18-20, Hebrews 7:5). Jesus Christ is our high priest, forever reign in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17-25).
4. Not from the Priestly Tribe
Both men are not from the tribe of Levi, a tribe consecrated to be priests (Hebrews 7:13-14).
5. Bread & Wine
Melchizedek brought out bread and wine before blessing Abraham (Genesis 14:18-19). Jesus Christ brought out bread and wine to symbolize a new covenant with his disciples (Matthew 26:26-28).
