10 Feb The Rich Man and Lazarus
This story of the Bible is very powerful even though it is short. Some people think this story is a parable but it’s a true story. If you read the whole Bible, you’ll see actual events are used as a metaphor for future events. We’ll list what God reveals through this short story.
1. Hell (Hades) is Real
This story describes what Hell was like before Jesus died for our sins. This story give a vivid description of the judgement on the wicked and righteousness. This also confirms that we are send to either Hell or Heaven right after we die in our mortal bodies.
2. Ignorance is Not Bliss
In this case for the rich man, ignorance is not bliss. Even though the man was the rich, he was ignorant of the things he needed to know such as the God of Israel and his wrath on the wicked. When he requested that Lazarus appeared to his 5 brothers to warn them about Hell, Abraham told him something more powerful than anything in this story. “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'” Luke 16:19. This verse foreshadows how most people today won’t believe in God or Hell even though there are prophets or pastors around warning them.
3. Selfishness is a Sin
The rich man in the story worried more about himself and his family more than strangers. Instead of helping Lazarus, he treated him like one of the dogs. Even after he landed in Hell, the rich man didn’t apologize to Lazarus for how he treated him. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ Luke 16:24. Even though when living, the rich man didn’t give Lazarus any pity, he expected Abraham to give him pity.
4. Help the Poor
It’s always good to help someone who is in poverty. Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done. Proverbs 19:17. Not only does God bless you but it feels good to give what you have to someone else who is need.
5. God Remembers You
Even though Lazarus was poor with sores God remembered him. Lazarus in Greek means God is my help so he may have grew up in a religious home. If you’re like Lazarus, not doing so well in life but keep your faith in tact, God will ensure you a spot in Heaven.
6. Don’t Envy Rich People
Many people today envy the rich and their lavish life. However if these same rich people are not Christians who shares their wealth, they will be in Hell. Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. James 5:1-3
7. Use Your Money Wisely
Don’t be like the rich man in this story and use all of your money on useless stuff like expensive clothes, cars, antiques, etc. Instead use your money to build up your community, help the poor, and to do God’s will. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20
