30 Dec The Importance of Giving
Part of being a Christian is giving. From giving your life to Christ to giving some of your money to the poor. The Bible makes it clear that it is more better to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). We will list in detail why it this is important.
1. Giving Attracts Blessings
God blesses those who gives, especially to the poor (Proverbs 28:27, Proverbs 19:17, Matthew 19:21, Job 20:10). Whenever someone gives to the poor, they are actually giving to the Kingdom of Heaven’s treasury. Jesus explains this concept in Matthew 25:34-46. The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. – Proverbs 10:22.
According to the LA Times, Global income inequality has worsened over the past four decades, a report finds, with the wealthiest 1% of the world’s population capturing twice as much income growth as the bottom half. Bill Gates, whose net worth is $93.9 billion, donates half of his income every year. His foundation is worth $50.7 billion in assets. There are at least 14 billionaires who pledged to give away half of their money in charities. This is the top reason the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.
2. Giving Builds Communities
Some places around the world do not have water, electricity, schools, WiFi. Most of these things we as Americans take for granted. Whenever there are organizations who are determined to build up third world countries, it is good to support these type of organizations as Christians. Jesus Christ stated himself that there will always have poor people among us so we should always give whenever we can to spread our resources (Mark 14:7).
If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? – James 2:16.
3. Giving Prevents Hoarding
Giving some of your possessions away to the needy prevents the practice of hoarding. Hoarding is not seen as good in God’s eyes. Hoarding your wealth is considered being greedy (Ecclesiastes 5:13, Proverbs 11:26, Luke 12:19, Proverbs 28:22). The Bible makes it clear that we should be concern in storing things that are of God instead of possessions (Matthew 6:20).
4. Giving is Part of Evangelism
As Christians, our duty is to spread the gospel (Matthew 28:19, Matthew 24:14, 1 Corinthians 9:16). Part of spreading the gospel is giving something, may it be a Bible, tract, money, food, etc. Since we must live on the gospel we are spreading around the world, giving is essential for evangelizing (1 Corinthians 9:14).
5. Being Jesus Christ
Once we are born again Christians, we no longer live for ourselves but Christ in us (Galatians 2:20). Jesus Christ was generous to give fish and bread to a crowd of 5000 people multiple times without expecting anything in return (John 21:13, John 6:11). Jesus Christ give his time to anyone who needed deliverance throughout his ministry. He even paid Peter’s taxes (Matthew 17:27).
6. Satan Hates When People Give Back
Satan and his demons love seeing people suffer. When you give to the poor, you are destroying their plans to make the poor suffer. Satan also doesn’t want you to receive God’s blessing for giving to the needy. That’s why there are known quotes such as, “You can’t help someone who can’t help themselves,” to deceive the masses.
7. God, Our Father, is A Giver
God is a perfect giver (James 1:17). The best gift God gave to the world is his son, Jesus Christ, so we won’t perish (John 3:16). The best gift God gives to the church is the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13). Just as God is a great giver, he expects his children to be great givers as well (2 Corinthians 9:7, Matthew 6:4, Matthew 7:10).
