Parallels Between Jesus Christ & Jonah

1. Both Proclaim Judgement on A Great City

Jonah proclaimed that Nineveh, which was a great city, shall be overthrown in 40 days (Jonah 3:2-4). Not only did Jesus Christ preached about repentance but told the people in Jerusalem that they will get a sign of Jonah (Matthew 16:4).

Unlike Nineveh, people in Jerusalem did not listen to Jesus Christ. They crucified him instead. Forty years later, Jerusalem was overthrown by the Roman Empire and many were crucified.

2. Both Stayed in the “Realm of the Dead” for 3 Days

Even though Jonah was in the belly of a fish, he thought he was in Hell or the realm of the dead for 3 days (Jonah 2:1-10). Jesus Christ spend 3 days in Hell to obtain the keys of life and death (Matthew 12:40, Revelation 1:18).

3. Both Slept During a Storm on a Boat

Jonah slept peacefully in the lowest part of the vessel while there was a violent storm (Jonah 1:5). Jesus Christ slept peacefully on a boat while his disciples were panicking (Matthew 8:24). Both men were woken by the people on the boat with them in order to stop the storm.

4. Sacrifice

Jonah sacrifice himself in order for the other men on the boat may live (Jonah 1:12). Jesus Christ sacrifice himself to save the human race from sin which is death (John 3:16).

5. People Repented After Their “Deaths”

When the sailors threw Jonah over, they cried out to God to not be charged with killing an innocent man. Then they feared God and made vows to him (Jonah 1:14-16). After Jesus Christ was crucified, the centurion cried out that he was indeed a righteous man and son of God (Luke 23:47, Mark 15:39). When people heard this, they went home and beat their chests (Luke Luke 23:48).
